El Dr. Gutiérrez es un experto en estudios de Microscopía de Fuerza Atómica (AFM) y cuenta con una amplia experiencia en el campo de la química coloidal/interfacial. Emplea técnicas experimentales sofisticadas que facilitan la elucidación de los mecanismos dominantes de interacción entre compuestos orgánicos y coloides, incluyendo virus, bacterias y superficies.

Intereses de investigación
Los intereses de investigación actuales del Dr. Gutiérrez se centran principalmente en las interacciones interfaciales de la Materia Orgánica Natural (es decir, una mezcla ubicua y altamente heterogénea de compuestos orgánicos con diferentes composiciones químicas, estructuras y propiedades) con superficies y coloides. Se consideran dos escenarios amplios: a) entornos acuáticos naturales, y b) tecnología de membranas. Los temas específicos incluyen: el impacto de la materia orgánica en el destino y transporte de nanomateriales (capados) (por ejemplo, nanopartículas de plata o MnO2, micro/nano plásticos y fibras) en acuíferos naturales y sistemas de tratamiento de agua (residual); las interacciones entre la materia orgánica y óxidos metálicos y su impacto en los procesos de oxidación catalítica (dirigidos tanto a aplicaciones de membranas cerámicas como a procesos en entornos acuáticos naturales). Además, la caracterización de las propiedades nanomecánicas de membranas (fibras huecas de ultrafiltración, membranas de intercambio iónico, membranas densas) y los ensuciamientos (orgánicos/biológicos) también son de especial interés.
